October is domestic violence awareness month.
For survivors like Diana Williams, she turned her story into a mission for change. She started the Ohio Women Against Domestic Violence organization last year to help women that look like her. October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. It’s a growing problem across the Columbus community.
In 2022 there were 7 domestic violence-related homicides for the entire year -- In 2023, that number is already 22. City Attorney Zach Klein says that’s a 300% increase, and the year is not even over yet.It was very hard for me to get out of the relationship. I actually had a near-death experience. My lungs collapsed and my ribs broke, and I had to have emergency surgery. So there is life after abuse,” she said.
We’ve had about 180 calls from women, so we’re documenting and tracking this and saying 'hey, this is a lot of people calling asking for resources,'” she said. “What that $800,000 will entail is a CPD coordinator to run our stop team, which is a strangulation team to really be the quarterback. It allows us a dedicated officer to do that. The City Attorney's Office will be able to hire one and a half victim advocates to assist in strangulation,” said City Attorney Zach Klein.Police also are part of a program known as. It’s designed to recognize domestic violence and encourage victims to be seen by forensic medical staff.
