Officer Joshua Ohlinger injured Deonte Jones, then 17, in a shooting on Aug. 27, 2022. A grand jury determined no criminal charges should be filed.
and another officer pulled over a vehicle with two people inside on East Main Street near Seymour Avenue on the city's Near East Side. The people in the car were identified by the Franklin County Prosecutor's Office as then 17-year-old Deonte Jones and 18-year-old Najaa Ellman.
After the vehicle pulled over, both Jones and Ellman got out quickly with guns in their hands and began to run away, according to body camera footage of the incident. Both Ohlinger and the other officer reported that Ellman appeared to be pointing the gun toward the officers. Ohlinger fired his gun four times, hitting Jones one time. Jones was taken to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center for treatment of his injury. Ellman continued running but eventually was taken into custody.The case was investigated by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation before beingEllman is currently facing charges of improper handling of a firearm and having weapons under disability, according to Franklin County Common Pleas Court records.
