A majority of the over 1,000 calls daily to Columbus schools transportation center are about bus stop locations and distances students must walk.
Columbus City school buses are running on time or “only slightly behind" under the new routing system implemented when school resumed earlier this month, but the district is now getting more than 1,000 calls daily about bus stop locations and other issues, Interim Superintendent Angela Chapman told the school board at its meeting Tuesday night.
Columbus City Schools — the state’s largest district with more than 46,000 students — encountered several speed bumps when the new bus routes were implemented earlier this month after students returned from winter break.Others complained about not being able to get through to anyone at the call center.
Columbus City Schools spokesperson Jacqueline Bryant previously told The Dispatch the call center line reached its capacity"on several occasions," leading the system to end calls instead of putting people on an extended hold.“The routers have been able to make several changes and adjustments because of the concerns raised by parents,” she said.
A total of 36,000 students from Columbus City Schools as well as students attending charter and other schools rely on the district's bus transportation, which had been plagued at times by more than 100 drivers calling off daily. The district has 512 drivers and 466 routes, as of Jan. 3. Sixty-five additional routes are outsourced to contractors.
