Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein announced the lawsuit against the South Korean automakers amid soaring vehicle thefts in Columbus and elsewhere.
Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant said in the release that during her time as chief Kia and Hyundai have offered"no meaningful cooperation" with city officials to solve the problem, which is overloading city police vehicle theft investigators.
Gabriel said glass break sensor security kits are available for purchase and installation at Hyundai dealerships and Compustar installers. Hyundai also is developing a security patch that it hopes to roll out in the first half of 2023 for certain vehicles, Gabriel said, adding updates for other vehicles will follow soon after.
"Kia also continues its efforts to develop additional solutions for vehicles not originally equipped with animmobilizer, including the development and testing of enhanced security software," Bell said in a statement.Klein said he plans to ask a judge to compel Kia and Hyundai to abate"the public nuisance caused by their inaction that has led to the rise in thefts, and with it, the substantial cost incurred by the city as it continues to respond to the automakers’ negligence.
