With $20 million assets under management, East Chop Capital provides financial, educational and social returns to a diverse investor base.
Founded in 2018 by Columbus entrepreneur Carrington Carter and New Jersey-based partner Calvin Butts Jr., the company operates virtually and has about 150 diverse investors. It also boasts $20 million in assets under management—including a $10 million luxury vacation rental home portfolio across nine states. , East Chop is committed to doing its part by helping Black households and other families of color build generational wealth.
Born in Dayton, Carrington earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Hampton University and an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh. While he embarked on a career in pharmaceutical marketing and advertising, he used his savings to slowly build a real estate portfolio, flipping single-family houses in his hometown.
He and his friends built a house in the Poconos, acquired three in Martha's Vineyard, and then one in Hilton Head. As more people asked to invest alongside them, East Chop Capital was born. Carrington said major obstacles to raising capital are fear, inability to evaluate risk, discomfort and access to capital—especially among African American investors.
“Black people and people of color, we don’t find ourselves sitting around having conversations like the one that Carrington was leading, talking about capital real estate purchases and investing in things that will generate long-term returns for us and our families,” said Clayton, 58, of the East Side, who retired as a senior leader in human resources for L Brands in 2020. “That got my attention. And his commitment to educating others about these opportunities.
East Chop Capital also is passionate about supporting minority-owned companies. Carrington said the company plans to either invest in diverse fund managers or majority fund managers who have a focus on investing in women- or minority-owned companies.
