Indianapolis Colts cornerback Isaiah Rodgers Sr. said he made an “error in judgment” after reports surfaced this week that the National Football League was investigating him for possible violations in its gambling policy.

According to ESPN and SportsHandle.com, a sportsbook account was opened under the name of Mr. Rodgers’ associate. More than 100 bets were placed in the account over an undisclosed period. Most of the bets ranged from $25 to $50, with some being placed on Colts games.

“The last thing I ever wanted to do was to be a distraction to the Colts organization, my coaches and my teammates. I’ve let people down that I care about. I made an error in judgment and I am going to work hard to make sure that those mistakes are rectified through this process. It’s an honor to play in the NFL and I have never taken that lightly. I am very sorry for all of this,” Mr. Rodgers said Monday.

Mr. Rodgers, 25, played in 15 Colts games last season and is expected to start for the team in the upcoming season. Under current NFL gambling guidelines, all league personnel are barred from engaging in betting on NFL games or betting at all in league facilities. The Rodgers investigation comes after the NFL suspended five players over gambling violations in April. Quintez Cephus and C.J. Moore of the Detroit Lions and Shaka Toney of the Washington Commanders were suspended indefinitely for gambling on NFL games during the 2022 season. Also, Lions players Stanley Berryhill and Jameson Williams received six-month suspensions for betting on non-NFL games from league facilities.
