DENVER — Veterinarians along the Front Range are seeing more dogs with severe coughs — some even developing pneumonia and requiring hospitalization.
Ernie's cough started roughly two weeks ago and has progressively gotten worse. He also has been lethargic. "I would say maybe a 50 percent increase in the number of coughing dogs we detect," said Dr. Amanda Cavanagh at the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital."We determine these are contagious dogs. They've had exposure, and they could pass it on to other dogs."
For dogs that do develop pneumonia, antibiotics are often necessary to get better. Ernie, thankfully, is responding well to the treatment. Some animals, though, have had to be hospitalized and even died.
