The reaction in Mayo after we beat Dublin in 2021 was one of sheer elation, that the Dubs were finally gone. But looking back, we didn’t handle the aftermath well at all. Pats on the back can make you soft.
After shifting what was deemed the immovable object in Dublin, Galway now face the task of stopping Donegal and Jim McGuinness’s irresistible force tomorrow.
I have heard a lot of comments since Galway’s win about how the second half reminded people of when Mayo beat Dublin in 2021. I think that, secretly, he will be delighted he didn’t have to devise another defeat of Dublin like 10 years ago. Similar to Mayo in 2021, they never reached anything close to that level of performance in the final against Kerry that year.
Galway have to put these guys on the backfoot and make them defend. Match-ups, as always, will be fascinating. Will Mogan be assigned to Shane Walsh, who limped off in bad shape the last day? But I think that their key players not being 100% may catch them out this time and Donegal should advance.I was at the All-Ireland quarter-final two years ago when the Armagh fans took over the place for their game with Galway. It was some sight.
Outside of Jason Foley, there isn’t a lot of height in the Kerry defence. I would be really surprised if Armagh don’t look to exploit this. Armagh have to bring a serious physicality and I think they will. In a way, the shackles can be thrown off as they have broken the quarter-final barrier and are underdogs.
