The Tritons opened the series with Friday’s 7-4 win, highlighted it with Saturday’s 11-2 victory and completed it with Sunday’s 4-1 win.UCSD sophomore third baseman Matt Halbach, who had one of Saturday’s homers, collected a team-high seven RBIs in the series. Tritons senior right-hander Michael Mitchell threw five shutout innings on Saturday. Teammate Nic Gregson was even more impressive, tossing 6 2/3 shutout innings on Sunday.
SDSU needs one win this week at New Mexico to clinch a berth in the four-team MW Tournament, which will be played May 25-28 in Fresno. Aztecs sophomore left-hander Chris Canada had one of his strongest starts of the season, striking out six in 5 1/3 innings without allowing an earned run.University of San DiegoThe Toreros clinched a spot in next week’s six-team WCC Tournament in Las Vegas and have their eye on a first-round bye. Third-place Portland could still move ahead of USD when it plays this week at USF. First-place Loyola Marymount has clinched at least a tie for the regular-season title.
