College baseball Super Regionals: Texas’ unbelievable blunder punches Stanford’s ticket to CWS
PALO ALTO – Keep your eye on the ball.
And so, when the ball plunked back onto the grass, an overjoyed Alberto Rios raced across home plate, scored the winning run in a 7-6 thriller and sent Stanford to its 19th trip to Omaha and the College World Series. After Drew Bowser smacked his third home run in as many days, a two-run shot over the center field wall, Stanford led 2-0 and chased Texas starter Tanner Witt out of the game.
It didn’t take long for the Cardinal to answer, scoring three runs in the bottom of the inning with two outs. But after Pancer and Ryan Bruno combined to load the bases, Serra alum Drew Dowd came in to put out the fire. The former Padre got Longhorn leadoff hitter Jared Thomas to whiff at an off-speed pitch and kept the 6-3 lead intact.
