After a rocky year in 2021, collaborative robots are making a comeback according to Interact Analysis.

, the collaborative robot market suffered a rocky year in 2020. In addition to the pandemic in 2020, supply chain and shipping issues impacted the production and delivery of robots.

Maya Xiao, senior analyst at Interact Analysis, the uncertainty from the ongoing consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic has propelled companies to invest in collaborative robots as a form of future-proofing.“In 2016, the International Organization for Standardization released the latest industrial standard for collaborative robots [..] which further clarified the design details and system safety technology specification of collaborative robots,” said Xiao.

In 2017, Interact Analysis reported the global sales of cobots exceeded 10,000 units, but Xiao says this will rise to 31,125 units by 2021. “So in the past five years, as a newly born market, the collaborative robot market has grown wildly. After hitting bottom in 2020, the collaborative robot market has experienced a huge recovery in 2021.”

In 2021, Xiao said cobot shipments have a year-on-year increase of 44.6%. She attributes this high growth rate to the low base in 2020 and the high enthusiasm of enterprises for automation equipment after the pandemic. Over the next two years, Xiao believes the cobot market will maintain a strong 25% annual growth rate and ship close to 50,000 cobots in 2022 but still face some barriers to growth.
