Colin Farrell wanted to do The Batman spinoff show based on Penguin because of the incredible makeup team that helped craft his character. 'I just knew there was so much to do with it, age it up, age it down. [Mike Marino's] just such a genius...'
Colin Farrell reveals how one aspect of his experience working on The Batman played a large part in convincing him to continue to portray Oswald Cobblepot in The Penguin spin-off television series. Farrell's portrayal of the Batman villain made his debut in Matt Reeves' 2021 superhero film as a foe of Robert Pattinson's caped crusader.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY When speaking to Variety at the Palm Springs International Film Festival's Film Awards, Farrell opened up about the upcoming Craig Zobel-Helmed The Batman spin-off television series that focuses on his character, revealing that the impressive make-up made him want to reprise his role.
"The only thing I had an idea was that I wasn't nearly getting to explore the character as much as I wanted to. Because there was all this extraordinary work by Mike Marino and Mike Fontaine, his team. And I just thought it was the tip of the iceberg, pardon the pun, that we're getting to do the six or seven scenes that we did in the film. I was grateful for them, but I wanted more! ... Any thoughts I had about an extended series was to do with Mike Marino's work.
The Batman Penguin spin-off is currently expected to begin filming in February, according to Farell, and is still currently set to air on HBO Max, despite shifts in priorities at both the service and with DC Studios under Warner Bros. Discovery. While many details about the series' story are currently unknown, Farrell called the show "tasty" and "unusual" while remaining loyal to Reeves' vision when revealing his reaction to the first script.
Farrell's transformation into the Penguin is one of The Batman's most impressive pieces of costume work, as such the actor's admiration of the makeup is easily understandable. When in costume, Farrell is almost completely unrecognizable when compared to his appearances in other films, with the makeup and prosthetics helping bring the character to life alongside his incredibly memorable performance.
