The Cougars will defend their Class 3A state title against Dallas Madison on Saturday.

Cole Cougars' Pierre Harris, left and Trey Blackmore put pressure on Hitchcock Bulldogs' Jayce Snyder during the second half of the Class 3A State Semifinals at the Alamodome, Thursday, March 10, 2022. Cole won, 53-49 and moves on to the final game against Dallas Madison on Saturday. If Cole was looking ahead to possible match-up against Dallas Madison, it didn’t show early in their Class 3A state semifinal on Thursday.

“It was a typical state tournament,” Cole coach Noe Cantu said. “You can never truly get comfortable. We got a huge lead, and I don’t think we relaxed, but you get worried every possession thinking if you are taking the right shot or doing the right thing. Sometimes it’s a little more nerve-racking holding a big lead than coming from behind.”

The Cougars had to work to get there Thursday. Cole was outscored 49-37 after getting that 16-0 advantage through the first four minutes. Blackmore had 11 points and the Cougars made 5 of 7 shots from beyond the arc to take a 19-5 lead after the first quarter. The Bulldogs closed the gap 43-40 on a jumper by Lloyd Jones III with 3:07 left in the fourth. Hitchcock opened the fourth by scoring 11 of the first 16 points. Hitchcock crept to 49-47 when Christian Dorsey completed a three-point play with a free throw with 9.0 seconds left.

“I think the experience we had in the past helped us a lot,” Livingston said. “Playing big games in big atmosphere, I felt that helped us stay together and composed.”“I thought our experience showed at the end,” Cantu said. “I don’t think we ever felt like we were going to lose. I don’t think we every panicked in that situation.
