Following the success of Cocaine Bear, director Elizabeth Banks addresses whether a sequel will continue the drug-fuelled animal carnage.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Cocaine Bear director Elizabeth Banks addresses whether audiences can expect Cocaine Bear 2 at any point in the future. Released earlier this year, Cocaine Bear earned mixed to positive reviews from critics and performed decently well at the box office.
While Cocaine Bear 2 has not yet been confirmed, Banks addresses the prospect of a sequel in a recent interview with Rolling Stone. While not revealing whether there are actually any plans currently in the works, the director does express interest in returning to the surprising story world that she created. Check out Banks' full comment below:
"I mean, I had an absolutely great time working on the project. I loved how subversive, crazy, silly, and funny it was. I loved surprising people with the cast. I don’t think anybody was expecting Margo Martindale, who’s 70 years old, to shoot that kid. We had a lot fun, and if I got the opportunity to surprise the audience and delight myself again, I would take it."
Does Cocaine Bear Need A Sequel? The main factor that drives whether a film gets a sequel or not is its box office performance. Cocaine Bear is estimated to have been made for between $30 and $35 million, ultimately raking in over $89 million at the global box office. Considering the film was rated R, the performance is certainly strong enough to suggest that a sequel is not off the table.Whether Cocaine Bear would really benefit from a sequel, however, is another question entirely.
A central problem that Cocaine Bear 2 would have to overcome would be not just feeling like a rehash of the first film. Cocaine Bear writer Jimmy Warden evidently feels like he could avoid this and has already expressed interest in "many sequels" in which the bear is the protagonist. Banks herself has also previously commented on continuing the universe with spinoffs, saying she'd be willing to make movies about different coked-up animals entirely, such as a shark.
