Eric Black Jr., in yellow, appears in court with his attorney Alvin Nunnery on January 14, 2019. Black is facing a charge of capital murder in the shooting death of 7-year-old Jazmine Barnes on December 30, 2018A man who drove the vehicle used in the 2018 shooting death of 7-year-old Jazmine Barnes and went on to testify against his accomplice was sentenced Thursday to 30 years in prison.
The investigation into Jazmine’s death prompted authorities to initially search for a white man with blue eyes, sunken cheeks and stubble, based on the accounts from the surviving siblings. The family, meanwhile, voiced concerns that the shooting was racially motivated. The defendants ultimately linked to the killing are Black.
In Woodruffe’s case, Judge Vanessa Velasquez, a visiting judge voted out of the 183rd District Court in 2018, sentenced him to life in prison without parole following a weeklong capital murder trial in April. The case had been transferred to an emergency relief docket as an attempt to alleviate the backlog in the criminal courts by bringing older, more complex cases to completion.
“You have to take responsibility,” Velasquez told Black in court. “Were it not for you thinking that these other folks were going to come out after you — this little girl would still be alive.”
