SIBU: Sarawak is willing to be the first state to implement the revival of teaching of science and mathematics in English, says Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Openg.
He said this in a speech to teachers when officiating at the state-level Teachers’ Day Celebration in Sri Aman Saturday .
Education minister Dr Maszlee Malik had, in a recent meeting with the Chief Minister, conveyed the intention of Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to reinstate teaching the two subjects in English. Abang Johari said the biggest obstacle would be to ensure that sufficient competent and English-proficient teachers were available to teach the subjects.
The second challenge, he said, was to ensure that proper textbooks were available and again gave assurances that the Sarawak government was willing to contribute financially to produce or purchase the textbooks.
