PETALING JAYA: Sixteen new Covid-19 cases have been detected, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 8,572 cases.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said three of the new cases were imported cases involving two Malaysians and a permanent resident.“The remaining 13 cases were locally transmitted, involving nine foreigners and four Malaysians,” he said.

Dr Noor Hisham said that among the foreigners, two were from the cleaning company cluster in Selangor and six were from Negri Sembilan’s Pedas cluster. He said another foreigner was a detainee at a temporary detention centre in Tawau, who was about to be deported to Indonesia but had tested positive for the virus.

As for the Malaysians, he said, two were in Sarawak from the Kidurong cluster, one was an accused person who had been placed in a lock-up in Melaka and one was a patient who tested positive while undergoing pre-surgery screening in Johor. Dr Noor Hisham added that 10 patients had recovered yesterday, with a total of 8,156 patients discharged since the outbreak began, putting Malaysia’s Covid-19 recovery rate at 95.1% out of the total number of positive cases.“Three patients are being treated at the intensive care units. None of them require ventilator support,” he said.
