Susie’s Bear Hollow, a new tropical bear habitat for the Andean and Sloth bears in Wilderness Trek, is unveiled at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.While animal comfort and visitor viewing are important, the zoo must also follow safety standards by thewhen building a habitat. Though a manual is unavailable for Andean bears, sloth bear enclosures should be large and encourage natural behavior. Sloth bears are adept climbers, which must be taken into consideration.
When wire fences are used, the AZA says that inward fencing with electrical wires is the best practice for these bears., although active design took two to three years. The former habitat was 60 years old. This is the fifth habitat renovation the zoo has done in the last decade, with the next rehabilitation being the gorilla habitat.
The Andean bears are listed as vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The zoo is working to help conserve Andean bears through the Andean Bear Conservation Alliance, which works with national parks, government agencies, and other conservation partners to protect Andean bears and their habitats.
