Smoke alarm batteries should be replaced once a year. If the alarm is more than 10 years old, the device should be replaced immediately, the city’s fire division says.

CLEVELAND, Ohio-- According to the Cleveland Division of Fire, it’s not just your clocks that will need to be adjusted for daylight savings time. You should check on your smoke alarms, too.

The move is a part of a national campaign, “Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery,” according to a recent press release. While it is true that newer smoke alarms typically feature 10-year, non-replaceable batteries, it is crucial to check that they are working, the release said. “Only WORKING smoke alarms save lives,” said Cleveland Fire Chief Anthony Luke in a recent statement. “As you change your clocks this weekend, I encourage everyone to change the batteries in your smoke alarms. It might just save the lives of your loved ones.”
