is starting its season this weekend – Oct. 21-22 – with “Considering Matthew Shepard.” The piece is Craig Hella Johnson’s modern oratorio about a gay student at the University of Wyoming who, 25 years ago this month, was brutally beaten and left to die.“Matthew Shepard’s story touched so many of us and remains shockingly timely even as we approach the 25th anniversary of his death,” said Gregory Ristow, the Choir’s newly named artistic director.

“I see a policy like that and realize the real-world implications that will have for some young person,” said Ristow: “It is heartbreaking. The part that is really terrifying is parental notification, which requires the church and school to out queer youth to their parents. “It’s important for youth to hear ‘You’re fine as you are,’ that there are communities that will support you even if they’re not the communities you’re in,” he says, in support of the show.

“Considering Matthew Shepard” will be performed: at 7 p.m., Oct. 21, at Avon Lake UCC, 32801 Electric Blvd. in Avon Lake; and 4 p.m., Oct. 22, at Trinity Cathedral, 2230 Euclid Ave. in Cleveland. Free parking is available at both locations.
