It seems ludicrous for San Jose to consider fining Garden City Construction’s Jim Salata for cleaning up downtown’s “Trash Bag Church.”

The old saying that “No good deed goes unpunished” was on full display in San Jose this week when city officials suggested that fines might be in order involving the historic but dilapidated First Church of Christ, Scientist building overlooking St. James Park.

“The developer was in violation of your entitlement approvals, and until just recently, you did nothing. Clearly, too little, too late,” he wrote. “The deteriorated and shredding plastic was bad for our environment, with microplastics entering our storm sewers, which eventually find their way to the bay. Additionally, those microplastics enter the air we all breathe, including you, your staff, and your families. The plastic wrap removal was justifiable, and for the public benefit.

When the city sends you a letter saying the sidewalk outside your house needs to be repaired, if you don’t have it done yourself, the city has a crew do the job and bills the homeowner. Couldn’t that tactic be explored for these cases? Salata doesn’t need to be praised for his actions — he certainly doesn’t want to be known as the “Hero of the Trash Bag Church” — but he shouldn’t be penalized for cleaning up a mess the city should have made sure was taken care of.Silicon Valley viewers will have a rooting interest when the 45th season of “Survivor.”, one of the 18 contestants in the latest edition of the long-running reality show, is a San Jose native and a 2014 graduate of Bellarmine College Prep.
