(UPDATE) CLASSES in several provinces and in Metro Manila were suspended on Friday due to the volcanic smog or vog from Taal Volcano.

In an announcement via Facebook, San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora announced the suspension in 'all levels in public and private schools.'Pasay City Mayor Emi Calixto issued the same directive as she warned residents to wear protective masks.Muntinlupa Mayor Ruffy Biazon said the suspension of classes in the city was due to the 'unhealthy level' of air quality over the city caused by the volcanic smog.

Biazon advised residents 'to avoid going out unless it is absolutely necessary' and to 'wear your facemask and if possible, protective eyewear.'Several towns and cities in the provinces of Cavite and Batangas also suspended classes in all levels.The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology on Thursday had placed Taal Volcano under alert level 1, amid the smog. It urged the public to stay indoors or wear an N95 face mask for protection.
