Net lettable area was sacrificed to declutter streets and give buildings more prominence.

A detailed look at artists Yip Yew Chong and tobyato's Fire Fish mural, which features Singapore River folk, at The Warehouses in Tan Tye Place.SINGAPORE – The next time you visit riverside lifestyle hub CQ @ Clarke Quay and find that you have plenty of space to move around the precinct on foot, know that this is the result of a recent revamp.

CQ, which sits on a 21,000 sq m site, is owned by CapitaLand Integrated Commercial Trust and managed by CapitaLand Investment. The precinct is divided into five blocks comprising 36 shophouses, one courtyard house and 10 warehouses. This gives fuller prominence to the Chinese Teochew-style mansion built in the 1870s and known as The Riverhouse, says Mr Phua.

To achieve this, some ornamental trees that provided little shade were removed to declutter the streets and improve sight-lines towards the Singapore River and Fort Canning Hill. “A critical approach was to reinforce these visual axes,” he says. The seats incorporate timber salvaged from two twakows, historical cargo vessels that were previously located at CQ and served as restaurants. To ensure that their design proposals were sensitive to the history in CQ, the architects delved into the archives of institutions such as the National Archives of Singapore, Building and Construction Authority and National Library Board.

The warehouses in Tan Tye Place, together with a conserved commercial building, make up The Warehouses block. Examining the layers of old paint, he also found that The Warehouses had a colourful past with a possible polychrome colour scheme at one stage. “In later years, the colour scheme appeared less varied and adopted a pastel palette,” he says.

The mural, titled Fire Fish, is a collaborative work by Singapore visual artists Toby Tan Xun Yi, better known as tobyato, and Yip Yew Chong. The 55-year-old recalls that the duo were having a discussion on Read Bridge when they decided to create a mural “that people could relate to through interplay with tobyato’s large-scale motifs and my traditional characters”.

The last major refurbishment works were in 2005 at the reported cost of $80 million. This included the addition of the 101 Bluebells and 18 thermal roof canopies, which range in height from 21.7m to 27.6m.The 1,300 sq m FairPrice Finest Clarke Quay, which opened in February, features an assortment of products offered in collaboration with Singapore-based partners. These are curated for residents in the area and include fresh produce from local farmers.

Mr Chua Boon Keat, head of Channels at FairPrice Group , says: “These concepts are part of FPG’s ongoing commitment to stay ahead of consumer needs and preferences by constantly reinventing and elevating retail experiences, while maintaining affordability and accessibility to excite our customers.”An artist’s impression of music retailer Swee Lee, a new tenant at The Warehouses in Clarke Quay.
