A Plano water tower in Plano, Texas, on Thursday, June 18, 2020. Plano City Council members are examining demand levels for the city’s Parks and Recreation field reservation program.
In 2022, the city had about 28,000 hours of programmed activity on its athletic fields. Of that, 71 percent were leagues, 25 percent were tournaments and about 4 percent were public reservations. One reason is that the fields must have some down time to eliminate wear and tear, Angeles said. It is also necessary for the schedule to allow for some days that can be utilized tournaments or for makeup practices that were canceled, for example.
Leagues must meet city qualifications to participate. Some of the criteria are current registration figures, the prior year registration and whether the activity is considered a primary or secondary sport.
