The release acknowledged that the launch of the program has meant a change in routines for residents, and thanked people for participating. More than half of what we throw in the garbage can go into the green cart. “By diverting organic waste, we can delay the need for a new landfill, protect our environment, and create something useful — compost,” the release stated.

Residents were advised that kitchen scraps and yard trimmings can all be placed in the green bins, and were reminded that should they choose to use bags or bin-liners for green cart waste, these must be compostable; plastic garbage bags could result in carts not getting collected.Article content
