We chat with Citadel creator & EP David Weil about how the new PrimeVideo series builds an interconnected spy world from scratch, and which of Priyanka Chopra and Richard Madden's action scenes he loves best:
Prime Video is returning to the spy thriller with Citadel, only this time the streaming platform's plans are more ambitious than ever. Created by David Weil and produced by Captain America: The Winter Soldier's Anthony and Joe Russo, the 6-episode first season turns classic espionage tropes upside down and blends them with a romance for the ages.
David Weil: What a great question. I think there's both opportunity and challenge in that decision, and part of it came because I wanted to do something different. As storytellers — Joe, Anthony, myself, and the incredible team of Citadel — we love spies. We love the spy genre; we love spy films. But we also wanted to try to do something different, and to take those conventions and turn them on their head.
David Weil: What is so unique about Citadel is that it's not based on any IP. There's no singular novelist who created an entire mythology. It's really a team, and I'm so fortunate to work with incredible creators from India and from Italy who are working on and creating their own shows. Together, we're really building this grand tapestry of story, which is Citadel.
David Weil: Well, that's the fun thing about working with the Russos. You can dream your grandest dream on the page, and they can try and make it come true. That's a testament to them and to their teams, and to the precision that they can use to create reality out of something imaginary.
