Ciggie-smuggling ops in Johor foiled

KULAI: Police have busted an attempt to smuggle illicit cigarettes and seized 8,430 cartons of contraband cigarettes in a raid here.

Kulai OCPD Supt Tok Beng Yeow said 10 suspects aged 16 to 22 were arrested in the raid that took place at about 9.45pm in an oil palm plantation on Monday .

“The suspects were in the midst of transferring the illicit cigarettes from a lorry to a van when the police raided the premises. “We are still investigating where the cigarettes were smuggled from and how long the syndicate has been active,” he told a press conference at Kulai police district headquarters here Tuesday .“The total value of all items seized during the raid amounts to RM519,000,” he said.“We believe“They will be remanded for four days, starting from Tuesday until Friday to assist with the investigation,” he said.

He added that the case was being investigated under Section 135 of the Customs Act 1967 for smuggling untaxed goods, which carries a penalty of a maximum three years’ jail or a fine that could be up to 20 times the value of seized goods or both.
