The Director of the CIA said although President Xi Jinping is “unsettled” by Russia’s failed invasion in Ukraine, his ambitions to take control of Taiwan must be taken seriously.

Beijing has become increasingly hostile to the self-governing island of 23 million people in recent months through increased military activity in the region and more aggressive rhetoric from President Xi.

“I think in many ways, he's been unsettled and sobered by what he's seen. I think he was surprised by the very poor military performance of the Russians,” he said on Sunday, local time.“In other words, the willingness of not just the United States, but our European allies as well to absorb a certain amount of economic cost in the interest of inflicting greater economic damage on Russia over time.

In October President Xi told the Chinese Communist Party’s National Congress that China will “never promise to renounce the use of force” to reunify Taiwan. “I think, as they've looked at Putin's experience in Ukraine, that's probably reinforced some of those doubts as well.
