In his message for World Mission Day 2024 which falls on October 20, Pope Francis has emphasised the Church’s mission to evangelise with renewed zeal, urging Catholics to invite everyone to the banquet of God’s love, echoing the theme from the Gospel of Matthew: “Go and invite everyone to the banquet” .
The Holy Father urged the Church to imitate the kindness and compassion of Christ when spreading the Gospel. Evangelisation, he said, should never be coercive or aggressive but instead reflect the love and tenderness of God. The mission is not about proselytism but about sharing the beauty of God’s saving love with joy and humility.
Pope Francis emphasised the universal nature of the Church’s mission, urging that the Gospel message be shared with everyone, regardless of their social or moral status. He pointed to the inclusiveness of the parable, where the king’s invitation was extended to “both good and bad” , and the special attention given to society’s marginalised, such as the poor, crippled, and blind .
