Church backs closure of schools in smog-hit Indian capital

Commuters drive past India Gate engulfed in blanketing toxic smog in India's capital New Delhi as worsening air pollution surged past the grim mark of 50 times the World Health Organization recommended daily maximum on Nov. 13. to switch schools to online classes from November 18 after air pollution shot up to its worst level this winter season.

However, the Supreme Court of India on Nov. 18 ordered the closure of classes 10 and 12 due to the worsening air quality. The court questioned the Delhi government and the Commission for Air Quality Management over the delay in invoking pollution preventive measures. “We hope that the government takes care to find a solution to tackle the air pollution so that we can save our children from this hazardous situation,” Charles told UCA News on 19.

Santosh Kumar, an electric rickshaw driver said he has been experiencing problems due to the toxic smog.
