The Fredericka Manor Care Center is working to find new placements for patients
A Chula Vista nursing home will close permanently next month, putting 185 staff members out of work and forcing dozens of patients to be relocated to other facilities.
The upcoming closure is only for the Fredericka Manor Care Center, and does not affect the rest of the retirement community, said Mary McMullin, Front Porch chief advancement officer.McMullin said the costs “have gone up astronomically,” which made it more difficult to hire full-time registered nurses and certified nursing assistants. Instead, the facility was using temporary staff hired through agencies, but that increased costs further and impacted the care residents received.
among all of San Diego County’s skilled nursing facilities from 2019 to 2022, California Department of Public Health data showed. , the American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living found. As of its mid-year report last month, the organization states 77 percent of nursing homes continue to face moderate to high levels of staffing shortages, and only 3 percent are fully staffed.
Although California’s population is steadily aging — San Diego County, for example, is expected to haveage 55 and older by 2030 — Chicotel said it’s not necessarily bad that new skilled nursing facilities aren’t opening. In recent years, he said more funding has been allocated toward resources that help older adults age in place longer, like in-home care and day centers where they can go for socializing and medical service.

Russian fighter jet flies dangerously close to US warplane over SyriaA Russian fighter jet flew very close to a U.S. surveillance aircraft over Syria, forcing it to go through the turbulent wake and putting the lives of the four American crew members in danger, U.S. officials said Monday. The officials said the incident, which happened just before noon EDT on Sunday, was a significant escalation in what has been a string of encounters between U.S. and Russian aircraft in Syria in recent weeks. The intercept by the Russian Su-35 impeded the U.S. crew’s ability to safely operate their MC-12 aircraft, the officials said, calling it a new level of unsafe behavior that could result in an accident or loss of life.
