As it stands, however, there is no requirement for MNAs to swear an oath of loyalty to anything or anyone beyond “the people of Québec.” Bill 4 simply declares the requirement to swear allegiance to the monarch null and void in Quebec. The Maybe team’s vision would still require the National Assembly to pass another law, or perhaps a motion, or else someone is going to have to challenge Bill 4. At time of writing, I’m not aware of anyone even considering it.

Nor is this likely to make as much noise in the mainstream media as Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s and Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s recent constitutional adventures, for a variety of reasons including that many Canadians — not least in media — think the monarchy isn’t worth defending against anything.
