PETALING JAYA: Only two pairs have beaten the imperious world No. 1 mixed pair Zheng Siwei-Huang Yaqiong of China since the start of 2022.

Can independent pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie become the third after Japan’s Yuta Watanabe-Arisa Higashino and Wang Yilyu-Huang Dongping to scalp the fancied pair?

World No. 8 Soon Huat-Shevon reached the last four with a hard-fought 21-17, 15-21, 21-19 victory over Indonesia’s world No. 14 Rinov Rivaldy-Pitha Haningtyas in Dubai yesterday. The victory was sweet revenge for Soon Huat-Shevon, who had lost to Rinov-Pitha in last December’s World Tour Finals. It was Soon Huat-Shevon’s third straight match in the tournament which went to three games after their hard-fought 15-21, 22-20, 21-15 win over Taiwan’s Ye Hong-wei-Lee Chia-hsin in the first round and 12-21, 22-20, 21-15 victory over China’s Cheng Xing-Chen Fanghui in the second round.

Soon Huat-Shevon have only taken a game once against Siwei-Yaqiong - in the 2019 French Open where they went down 21-19, 19-21, 15-21.
