China is intensifying efforts to rescue its nationals who have fallen prey to scam operations luring them to countries like Myanmar. The Ministry of Public Security revealed that overseas fraud syndicates are employing deceptive tactics to entice Chinese citizens with promises of high-paying jobs, accommodation, and travel expenses, ultimately trapping them in telecom fraud dens.

China has pledged to make every effort to rescue its nationals who have become victims of scam operations targeting them for relocation to countries like Myanmar . The public security ministry revealed on Wednesday that overseas fraud syndicates are luring Chinese citizens with enticing promises of high salaries, food, lodging, and airfare, ultimately trapping them in telecom fraud dens located in towns such as Myawaddy, situated on Myanmar 's border with Thailand.

State media outlet CCTV aired a report detailing this issue, following a high-profile case involving a Chinese actor who disappeared earlier this month in Thailand's Tak province. Thai authorities suspect he was a victim of human trafficking. China has vowed to intensify its collaboration with law enforcement agencies of other nations to coordinate the rescue of citizens ensnared overseas and dismantle these telecom fraud hubs. The ministry highlighted a 2023 campaign undertaken in conjunction with Myanmar authorities aimed at dismantling The Kokang 'Four Families,' a notorious ethnically Chinese criminal organization operating along Myanmar's border with China's southern Yunnan province. While Southeast Asian nations have traditionally benefited from Chinese tourism, a lucrative industry that generated billions of dollars annually before the Covid-19 pandemic, growing concerns about trafficking and widespread narratives circulating on Chinese social media about travelers being held captive by criminal gangs could deter Chinese tourists from choosing these destinations. In response, Thai policymakers have pledged to expedite the resolution of issues that are jeopardizing Thailand's reputation as a safe tourist destination, according to a report by China's state-run Xinhua news agency. Last year, Thailand facilitated the repatriation of approximately 900 Chinese nationals who had been held captive in scam centers in Myawaddy. Furthermore, in 2023, Myanmar handed over 31,000 suspected telecom fraud perpetrators to China. Chinese state media reported at the time that Myanmar was home to over 1,000 scam centers, employing an estimated 100,000 individuals in daily telecom fraud operations. During a meeting with the Myanmar junta leader in November, Chinese Premier Li Qiang urged for joint efforts to combat transnational crimes, including online gambling and telecom fraud. The Ministry of Public Security emphasized the importance of public vigilance, urging citizens to strengthen their personal safety measures and avoid blindly accepting offers of lucrative overseas jobs to prevent falling victim to scams and telecom fraud operations
