Meng Hongwei took over Interpol at a time when Beijing was doubling down on efforts to catch fugitive Chinese officials and executives who had fled abroad, many to evade corruption charges
BEIJING—A Chinese court sentenced a senior police official who had headed Interpol to 13½ years in prison for bribery, more than a year after he dramatically disappeared while still holding the international position.
Meng Hongwei told the No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court in the port city of Tianjin that he wouldn’t appeal the prison sentence or a 2 million yuan fine, according to a statement posted Tuesday on the court’s website.
