China resumes Australian coal imports: reports

As many as five Australian coal ships are reportedly on their way to China with an unofficial ban on the commodity lifted after more than two years.

newspaper said a shipment of 72,000 tonnes of coking coal would arrive at Zhanjiang Port in southern China’s Guangdong province on February 8. It said the shipment for Baoshan IronCoal traders believe Glencore has signed contracts to sell Australian coal to China but has not yet delivered them. Glencore declined to comment on Thursday.

Coronado Global Resources said last month “multiple” Chinese customers had sought to buy the coal it mines in Queensland. As well as the shipment due to arrive at Zhanjiang Port, another shipment of 12,300 tonnes of thermal coal loaded at Newcastle was expected arrive at the Port of Changshu in China on February 12.

The coal shipments comes ahead of Trade Minister Don Farrell’s online meeting with his Chinese counterpart next week.The Global Times
