Defence Minister Peter Dutton warns any cyber attackers targeting Australia would face a hefty price.
China’s cyber warfare capabilities now have the capacity to mount “an unprecedented digital onslaught”, Defence Minister Peter Dutton will warn, saying Beijing’s online weaponry has grown in parallel with its military build up.
At a speech marking the opening of the Australian Signals Directorate’s new Canberra headquarters, Mr Dutton will point to Russia’s, and Ukraine’s efforts to fight back, as evidence of how cyber warfare is changing, with hacking groups now affiliating with national governments. Mr Dutton will also reveal an Australian P-8 Poseidon spy plane will soon be deployed to Japan to take part in a trilateral intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance mission with the US and Japanese air forces, as tensions grow over Chinese incursions in the East China Sea and Taiwanese airspace.Amid a pivot by the government to campaign on its national security credentials ahead of the election, Mr Dutton will say cyber peace can only be maintained through strength.
While China’s military build-up is the largest of its kind in modern times, “China’s hard power expansion has been matched by the growth of its cyber forces, to a point where our authorities assess that China is now capable of mounting an unprecedented digital onslaught,” Mr Dutton will say.
