China retaliates against Canadian institutions and individuals involved in human rights issues concerning Uyghurs and Tibetans by freezing assets and banning entry.
BEIJING: China is retaliating against two Canadian institutions and 20 individuals involved in human rights issues concerning Uyghurs and Tibetans. For both institutions, Beijing said it would freeze 'movable property, immovable property and other types of property within China'. China froze the assets of 15 individuals from the Uyghur Institute and five from the Tibet Committee, and banned them from entering the country, including Hong Kong and Macau.
According to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the measures, which came into effect on Saturday, include asset freezes and entry bans, targeting the Canadian Uyghur Human Rights Project and the Canada-Tibet Committee. Human rights groups accuse Beijing of widespread abuses against Uyghurs, a Muslim ethnic minority of 10 million people in the western region of Xinjiang, including the widespread use of forced labor in camps. Beijing denies any human rights violations. China has controlled Tibet since 1950, described as 'a peaceful liberation' from feudal serfdom. International human rights groups and exiles consistently denounce actions labeled as the Chinese government's oppression in Tibet. According to Reuters, it did not receive an immediate response from the Canadian embassy in Beijing, including human rights groups or Global Affairs Canada
