Vladimir Putin has assured Chinese President Xi Jinping he is ready for “negotiating” over the war in Ukraine.
The two leaders held informal talks that lasted over four hours on Monday, ahead of more formal meetings scheduled to be held in the coming days.
Each leader addressed each other as a “dear friend” and exchanged pleasantries about their respective countries’ prosperity. “You know that we are always ready for negotiating and we will discuss all those questions, including your suggestions,” he said. “And set a fine example for developing a new model of major-country relations featuring mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation.”Mr Xi’s visit to Moscow – his first in four years – makes him the only world leader to have met with Mr Putin since the Russian President was issued with an arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court.
“The world should not be fooled by any tactical move by Russia, supported by China or any other country, to freeze the war on its own terms,” he said.
