On an average day 10 reports of child sexual abuse are substantiated by Ohio children's services investigators.

Thousands of Ohio children are sexually abused every year, with dozens of reports coming daily to child protective and police officials across the state's 88 counties. In recent years, child protective workers annually investigated nearly 10,000 reports of child sexual abuse, a USA TODAY Network Ohio analysis shows. That number is close to the child populations of the cities of Mansfield or Delaware.

So was what happened to the 10-year-old rare? The USA TODAY Network Ohio set out to answer a simple question: How many kids are victims of sexual abuse or violence in Ohio? It's difficult to know because of the nature of these abuses and crimes – they most frequently involve a family member or person close to the victim ‒ and the quality of the data used to track them.

More than 22,000 children were listed as victims in Ohio law enforcement reports on sexual violence between 2017 and 2021.Miranda LeBoeuf survived childhood abuse by her father, who is now in prison. The messy family dynamics and social taboos of child sexual abuse She said she was afraid her family wouldn’t believe her. “As it turns out, 13-year-old me was right. I stand here today with no members of that family speaking to me. If they don’t believe me now with evidence, they certainly wouldn’t have believed me then.”

Cases substantiated by children's services are not always criminally prosecuted or result in a conviction, said Alexandra Patsfall, deputy director of clinical practice at Hamilton County Children’s Services. Some children do not give consistent and clear stories about sexual abuse. Child sexual abuse doesn’t frequently involve rape or rape that could result in pregnancy. Groff said she has never dealt with a child that has become pregnant because of rape during her two decades of work in Summit County. It happens, she said, but it’s rare.
