A child held in adult custody in a Victorian prison was subjected to a spit hood and forced to spend more than 20 hours a day in solitary confinement with water supply cut off, an inquiry has revealed.

, tabled in Victoria's Parliament on Wednesday, detailed the incident from February this year where the teenager had a spit hood put on him by prison officers despite there being no cause for doing so.

Picture: David McNew/Getty Images Following his cell move, the child had water supply turned off for 22 hours a day - despite repeatedly pleading staff to reinstate access - and could not administer basic sanitation tasks like handwashing and using toilet facilities.

Currently, South Australia is the only Australian jurisdiction to have a formal legislative ban in place on the use of spit hoods in adult and youth correctional facilities, since its implementation in 2021.
