A 27-year-old Chicago man drowned in Lake Michigan Saturday afternoon after he was swimming near the boat ramps next to Whiting’s Whihala Beach.

Indiana Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Nicole Baumann said the man and his friends were swimming near the boat ramps around 4:09 p.m. when we he went under the water and his friends couldn’t find him.Dive teams responded to the scene to search. After his body was recovered by the Whiting Fire Department, Gerardo Castanda-Soto was pronounced dead at 6:30 p.m. at St. Catherine’s Hospital in East Chicago, Baumann said.

It’s the second drowning in less than a week at Indiana beaches. On Sept. 4, 14-year-old K’Mari Mack, of East Chicago, died after jumping off a breakwall along Lake Michigan near Jeorse Park in East Chicago even though he and the group he was with were advised against it.
