During 1942, gasoline and rubber were rationed. People were told to ride the city’s streetcars and buses in order to save their tires and ease traffic congestion for people going to work. DR&TC reported that it “hauled” 6.2 million paying customers in January 1942 alone.began using the streetcars for distribution. In May 1942, The News announced it would circulate the daily newspaper via chartered streetcars, and the change would save 75% of its tire use.

In December 1942, Tom Owens, traffic superintendent of the Dallas Railway & Terminal Company, announced that labor shortages might require women to keep the city’s public transit running. Owens was apprehensive — he alleged women “do not handle heavy streetcars and keep schedules as well as men.”reported on the first women “to enter Dallas’ public transportation system.” Despite being the first, they were not able to operate the streetcars themselves.

Ten new motorwomen per week were expected to join the ranks, and by late July 1943, 49 women were employed as streetcar operators and bus drivers.As World War II ended in August 1945, war production also concluded. The labor market was suddenly full again. The women who had filled men’s roles during the war found themselves in competition for those same positions.
