Chavez concedes San Jose mayor race to Mahan
Cindy Chavez conceded San Jose’s race for mayor to opponent Matt Mahan on Wednesday after just over a week of vote counting left her a few thousand votes short and with a dwindling number of uncounted ballots left for her to catch up.in which Santa Clara County election officials said 90% of expected ballots had been counted, Chavez had fallen farther behind, down 6,351 votes to Mahan, who had 51.32% of the 240,521 votes counted so far to Chavez’s 48.68%, a lead of 2.64 percentage points.
“Over the past year, our campaign brought together a broad coalition of support, including labor and business, environmentalists and innovators, educators and engineers, neighborhood leaders and elected officials — people representing every inch of San Jose and each of its diverse communities,” Chavez continued.
The race turned on questions of who would best tackle rising violent crime and homelessness. Chavez, a Santa Clara County supervisor and former labor leader who also served as a San Jose councilwoman and vice mayor, ran on her experience in elected office.
