AS we reflect on the historical evolution of electricity in Sabah, one cannot overlook the pivotal role played by Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB), formerly known as Lembaga Letrik Sabah (LLS).

From its modest beginnings in 1910, when electricity was supplied by three different organizations in Sandakan, the then Jesselton , and Labuan, to its transformation into a robust energy provider, SESB’s journey is a testament to the crucial significance of electricity as the lifeblood of the state’s economy.

In 1954, recognizing the significance of electricity in our economic development growth, an Electricity Advisory Board was established to guide the government and the Director of Public Works in all aspects of operations. By January 1st, 1957, this led to the historic formation of the North Borneo Electricity Board, operating under the State Ordinance Chapter 27, 1957.

Notably, in 1984, LLS achieved yet another milestone - the commissioning of the state’s first hydro-electric generation plant in Pangi, Tenom. This ‘run-of-river’ plant boasted an installed capacity of 66 MW and was a testament to our commitment to harnessing renewable energy sources. Moreover, in 1996, we commissioned the country’s first barge-mounted power station docked in Sepanggar Bay, with an installed capacity of 40 MW, to supplement electricity supply needs along the West Coast Grid.

On September 1st, 1998, Lembaga Letrik Sabah transformed into Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd , becoming a subsidiary of Tenaga Nasional Berhad , with 80pc equity, and the remaining 20pc held by the Sabah Government.
