The Gahanna mayor's race is the only one between candidates in Franklin County in May primary - but was it needed at all?
But having to hold the primary will cost Gahanna taxpayers more than $75,000 to conduct voting in its 30 precincts.
There are no other candidate races in Franklin County on an extremely sparse May primary ballot. Voters in the Madison-Plains school district will be voting on a bond issue, and about a dozen individual voting precincts in Columbus and other communities in the county will get to vote on liquor sales requests sought by convenience and grocery stores. Voters should check theto see whether they have any issues on the ballot. Polling locations where there are not local races will not be open.
But it failed to anticipate the impact of existing language that"two persons receiving the most number of votes in the primary election shall be the candidates for the municipal election ." The purpose of the change was to prevent serious candidates who had prepared for the race to have votes taken from them by last-minute filers."And perhaps you end up with a candidate winning who the majority of the electorate doesn't agree with," Ewald said.
