BREAKING: The leader of the so-called “tinnie terrorists” was today jailed over a 2016 plot to sail a tiny boat to the Philippines and join a jihadist group.
Robert Cerantonio used his immense platform to spread violent extremist propaganda online and across TV and radio.
But he had no platform today — he was silent as he sat in the dock awaiting sentencing for leading an elaborate plot that saw him labelled a “tinnie terrorist”. But the 34-year-old father of two was picked up by Australia Federal Police officers driving near Cairns with the seven-metre fishing boat on the back.
Murat Kaya, 28, was jailed for three years and eight months. His younger brother Kadir, 24, was jailed for four years. Dacre, Granata and Thorne were each jailed for four years but could be out after serving just three. But Cerantonio, who lived in the Philippines between 2013 and 2014, was clearly the ringleader.
