Quarterback Justin Herbert #10 of the Los Angeles Chargers reaches for the touchdown against the Las Vegas Raiders in the first half of a NFL football game at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood on Sunday, October 1, 2023. INGLEWOOD — The Chargers parlayed a strong defense and a strong offensive start while overcoming a finger injury to quarterback Justin Herbert on his left, non-throwing hand to defeat the Las Vegas Raiders 24-17 on Sunday at SoFi Stadium.

After stopping the Chargers on a fourth-and-1 at the 34 with 3:30 left, the Raiders drove to the 3-yard line, but rookie quarterback Aidan O’Connell’s pass at the goal line was intercepted by cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. Instead of running the ball back, Samuel hit the turf at the 11-yard line. The Chargers built a 24-7 lead by halftime, aided in large part by Raiders mistakes. O’Connell, playing in place of an injured Las Vegas veteran JImmy Garoppolo, fumbled twice as he was about to be sacked in the second quarter to set up two touchdowns for the Chargers.

Austin Johnson recovered the second fumble at the Raiders’ 35, and Herbert capped the short drive with a 1-yard quarterback sneak that made it 24-7 with 3:05 left in the half. The Raiders stopped Herbert on a third-and-goal at the 1, but he managed to score on fourth-and-goal at the 1.
