DPP lawmakers clash with opposition in a bid to prevent passage of bills that could weaken Taiwan's democracy.

Taiwan ese lawmakers engaged in a chaotic scene on Friday (Dec 20) as President Lai Ching-te's Democratic Progressive Party ( DPP ) obstructed the passage of bills they argue threaten the island's democratic system. DPP lawmakers occupied the parliament's main chamber since Thursday night, barricading themselves inside and piling up chairs to block entrances.

They aimed to prevent three legal amendments proposed by the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) and its ally Taiwan People's Party (TPP), which would make it harder for voters to remove elected officials deemed unfit. DPP lawmakers condemned the opposition's actions as 'parliamentary dictatorship' and warned that forcefully passing the amendments would damage Taiwan's democratic institutions and civil society. One contested bill proposed by the KMT and TPP seeks to raise the threshold for recalling elected officials. The KMT argues this would prevent abuse of recall power, but DPP lawmakers fear it would diminish voters' rights to remove ineffective officials. Outside parliament, thousands protested the bills, chanting slogans such as 'return the evil amendments' and 'Defend Taiwan'
