RECENTLY, we asked ratepayers in Kota Kinabalu on what changes they wished to see in the city now that there is a new Mayor in Datuk Sabin Samitah.

Among the top requests for better quality of city life are improved public transportation, cleanliness, safer environment and how it’s time to update the parking ticket system.

The homeless and street beggars are a danger to the drivers and themselves. Some of the abandoned buildings near Asia City can be better used for the community. Better government clinics in town. More frequent towing away of cars who park illegally or double park etc. –RUBBISH collection and education about the correct disposal of rubbish necessary. Many think it is okay to throw their household rubbish along the road.

Open more recreational parks in the outskirts, such as in Inanam, Kolombong and Sepanggar, among others. Appoint councillors who have actual expertise, and not merely political appointments. Increase enforcement to ensure KK is free from beggars on traffic lights and illegal vendors. Enforcement – Protection for licensed traders and monitor any development/renovation projects to avoid the piling up of construction waste.

The unstable economic situation of the homeless often compels them to resort to criminal activities to make ends meet. The existing parks serve as the “lungs of the city”, helping purify the air. Another type of beggar distributes letters claiming to have a medical condition. However, their physical appearance appears healthy. –PLEASE take care of the cleanliness of the city. Fine those who litter everywhere. –PLEASE deal with illegal immigrants in KK, as a woman I feel unsafe with their presence. Of course, there are half of them who are good, but there are also those who are heavily involved in crime and this makes me feel unsafe.
